Friends of Johnston Internships

Have a passion for working outdoors? Enjoy working with children? Like getting your hands dirty? Interested in the administrative functioning of a growing non-profit organization?

 

The Friends of Johnston, Inc. and Camel's Hump Nature School have numerous opportunities for interns to get involved. Internships are un-paid but we would be happy to work with you for college credit or references upon completion of your internship.

Internship Opportunities

Summer Camp Counselor

Summer Camp Counselor Interns work with the Camel's Hump Nature School Lead Counselors during the entire camp season. Interns perform various tasks to ensure smooth camp operations and the safety of all camp participants. These include leading/supporting hands-on activities, art projects, stories, games, nature treks through the fields and forests, picnics by the creek, and nature-based projects. Interns also assist with activity calendars, parent communication, and before/after care.

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children (preferably in a camp setting)

  • CPR/First Aid certified

  • General knowledge of natural history

  • Ability to relate well to all kinds of people

  • Self-motivated and reliable

  • Excellent oral communication skills

Stewardship/Horticulture

Stewardship/Horticulture Interns receive training to help with the community garden utilizing Integrated Pest Management, assist with gardening on the farm, play an active role in park design, habitat restoration, storm water management and many other stewardship/horticulture activities at Camel's Hump Farm.

Qualifications:

  • Interested in, or pursuing, a career in horticulture, sustainability, environmental education or related field

  • General knowledge of natural history

  • Ability to relate well to all kinds of people

  • Self-motivated and reliable

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Design Your Own!

Design Your Own interns have the opportunity to create their own unique project in cooperation with a mentor. Projects could include designing new programming for Camel's Hump Farm or creating interpretive signs. Design your own internship projects require a detailed plan and result in something that can be used on the farm in the future.

Qualifications:

  • Interested in, or pursuing, a career in horticulture, sustainability, environmental education or related field

  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined, and reliable

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Extremely organized

Environmental Education

Environmental Education Interns receive training from professional naturalists to teach a variety of programs to visitors of all ages, help with ongoing research projects, and assist with program animal care.  Opportunities will be available to learn techniques for developing and evaluating programs as well as developing public exhibits and educational displays.  In addition, interns at Camel's Hump Farm are expected to design and complete an individual project of their choice to be used at the farm in the future.

  • Interested in, or pursuing, a career in environmental education

  • General knowledge of natural history

  • Experience working with children

  • Ability to relate well to all kinds of people

  • Self-motivated and reliable

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Non-profit Administration

Non-profit Administration Interns receive training and experience in various aspects of what goes on behind the scenes at the Friends of Johnston (FoJ). Interns can take part in branding/marketing, outreach/communications, volunteer recruitment/management, and program design/scheduling for FoJ and Camel's Hump Nature School. They will gain experience working in the field where they can network with other professionals.

 

Qualifications:

  • Interested in, or pursuing, a career in natural resources management, marketing, or related field

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • General knowledge of natural history

  • Administrative/office experience

  • Extremely organized

  • Ability to relate well to all kinds of people

  • Self-motivated and reliable
